Astronomy and Space: Why is nothingness inherently unstable?

That's what Stephen Hawking, Victor Stenger, and some Nobel Prize winning Physicist said (among others). I'm not scientifically illiterate, but can you explain this in laymens terms. I'm sure this isn't an easy principle to grasp. A link or source would also be good.
