I would like to do something in astronomy. But im going to join the military soon. I wanted to know what branch would help me out the most, being as i want to do something in astronomy. I heard the air force. Is that true? I was originally going to join the navy

Air Force..
jus go to the website and look at the jobs offered.
most of the stuff you would be interested in is under electronics.

The Navy. Ship's Quartermasters are responsible for navigation. As a Quartermaster you'll learn to use a sextant and take astronomical fixes and resolve them into your latitude and longitude.... just like sailors have been doing for hundreds of years.

Even with satellite navigation and all the other navigational aids available they are still trained in this art and still practice almost every evening. I used to love to hang out on the Signal Bridge with the Quartermasters at sunset and watch them take fixes. The senior Quartermasters seemed to know the names of hundreds of stars and could pick every planet out in the sky.
