I posted a couple days ago that I had been experiencing chest tightness, trouble breathing etc. I finally went to the urgent care after work today because I have not been sleeping (waking up breathless) and my chest had been tight all day. Anyway, the doctor diagnosed Asthmatic Bronchitis, gave me a breathing treatment (which helped a lot!) and a rx for an albuterol inhaler.

Is asthmatic bronchitis different from asthma or is it just a fancy name for bronchitis? I am quite confused. I am supposed to be using the inhaler as needed and to return in 2 weeks if symptoms do not improve.

I'm not sure I have a good answer to your question, but I was diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis 15 years ago & I've had asthma for many years. For me, the asthmatic bronchitis was triggered by a bacterial infection in my sinus & got down into the lungs. Antibiotics cleared the infection, but I could not get rid of the persistent cough for 4-6 weeks especially when I tried to speak. The doctor explained the only reason the bronchial tubes & vocal corRAB remained inflamed was an asthma type reaction. I had these episodes every 12-18 months for about 10 years, then they subsided, but my regular type asthma got worse.

Thanks for replying RonB

Did you have asthma before your first diagnosis of asthmatic bronchitis or did you already have asthma before it? I believe mine is bacterial too because I am almost done with a second course of antibiotics and am finally feeling better for the most part but am still having chest tightness, trouble breathing, cough and excessive mucus that come on almost every day and become better with the use of an inhaler. This will be 2 mths since I have been sick and 2 weeks since the asthmatic bronchitis diagnosis. If the breathing problems do not go away after I finish this round of antibiotics I'll go back to the doctor but I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience of this without having any prior diagnosis of asthma.

I had mild asthma for about 10 years prior to the 1st asthmatic bronchitis. My 1st episode of asthmatic bronchitis lasted 2-3 months because the antibiotics I was originally given were not effective against the specific type of bacterial infection I had. After about 1 month they did a throat culture and switched the antibiotic to one that worked, but by this time my cough was really bad & I was exhausted. I was on multiple inhalers & other asthma meRAB and it was a steady but very slow recovery after the right antibiotic - coughing when trying to speak was the major problem, breathing was not a major problem. Tussionex was the only cough suppressant that worked but this drug made me feel terrible so I'd only use it when the cough was really bad. Subsequent bouts of asthmatic bronchitis lasted 1-4 weeks depending on how soon I started antibiotics and asthma meRAB.
