For about a month and a half, I have been short of breath. It has been mild, and for the most part I forget about it. It has been getting a little worse over the last week, and I am making a doctors appointment to get it checked out. I have had acid reflux for half a year, and I thought I had it under control, but I am getting the "something is in my throat feeling" almost 24/7 now.

I have been on a streak sorta with infections. In the last four months I had the flu, an ear infection, sinus infection, and mono.

Does this sound like asthma at all? In the last few days I am noticing that I am coughing too.

Since you have acid reflux I would say it's related to your current flare up with it most likely.

I would second Titchou's response. Acid Reflux is the most likely culprit given your situation.

I have had acid reflux sine January, and never had a breathing problem. Now, for the last month and a half, this breathing problem is getting to me.

Reflux can be a progressive condition. The initial symptoms are generally directly related to the refluxing of acid (i.e. a slight burning sensation in the throat), but over time the symptoms shift as the body tries to protect itself from the effect of chronic acid irritation.

Inflammation from the acid can radiate from the esophagus into the sinuses and the lining of the lungs causing sinus inflammation and asthma-like symptoms along with things like post-nasal drip and the feeling of something stuck in your throat (which is generally caused by an area that has been inflamed by refluxing acid).

You mentioned in your OP that your GERD seems to be flaring up right now which is why we suspect that the shortness of breath is related to the GERD.

Interesting.... you mention post nasal drip. That is pretty bad right now as well. I had post nasal drip VERY bad when I was battling my sinus infection. Once I finally rid my self of the infection, the post nasal drip finally went away. Things are starting, unfortunately, are coming back.

I should see my ENT again so she can look to see how bad this reflux is getting.

You may be better off seeing a gastroenterologist.

An ENT has fairly limited ability to see how bad reflux is getting, but a GI doc will likely want to schedule an upper endoscopy to really see your esophagus to check for any damage.

If your symptoms are GERD related (which is what it sounRAB like), the ENT is only going to be able to treat the symptoms that are secondary to the reflux, not the cause of the reflux and its direct symptoms.
