Download Ringdroid from the market. Use it to register you MP3 files as ringtones, notifications and alarms. Assign them as previous poster said.
Rings Extended is an app that allows you to choose any audio file on your SD card, in any location, for any notification sound or ringtone in any app. It integrates into Android in such a way that whenever an app asks you to choose a ringtone/audio file it simply pops up asking if you want to use the default Android file chooser or Rings Extended.

Just set Rings Extended as your default, it works perfectly.
