On the 29th July, the Russian army got ready to help Serbia defend itself against Austrian attack. Germany warned Russia not to help the Serbs.

Why did Germany not want Russia to help the Serbs? Was it because they were worried they were going to gang up on them?

Thanks.

Germany did not want Russia to help the Serbs because in so doing they would have to declare war on Austria-Hingary. This, in turn, would trigger a treaty of alliance between Germany and Austria, obliging Germany to declare war on Russia. This, in turn, would trigger another treaty, obliging France to declare war on Germany.
