Different issue. If you are running around saying you are gay, you are going to be treated about the same as someone running around saying they are a camel fucker, screwed the captain's daughter, or enjoy screwing holes in the sand... You brought the attention on yourself.
There are obviously a lot of gays, camel fuckers, and sand hole screwers who have served this countries military up to now. They just did not run around talking about it...
House votes to repeal 'don't ask, don't tell'
By JIM ABRAMS (AP) – 5 hours ago
WASHINGTON — The House has voted to repeal the 1993 law known as "don't ask, don't tell" and allow gays to serve openly in the military.
The House vote Thursday came several hours after the Senate Armed Services Committee took the same course and approved a measure repealing the policy that prohibits service by gays who openly acknowledge their sexual orientation.
The House was a victory for President Barack Obama, who has pushed for a change in military policy, and for gay rights group who have made an end to "don't ask, don't tell" their top legislative priority.
Republicans voted overwhelmingly against lifting the ban, saying Congress should wait until the Pentagon completes a review of the impact of a repeal on military life and readiness.
Difficult situation. Similar to someone who is employed by an employer who has a strict "drug free" workplace policy, has used drugs all his/her employment period, blows that last test just before retirement, and signed onto the employment agreement.
Maybe if you don't want to dance with the Devil, you should not keep hanging out by the jukebox, picking out the tunes!
In this day and age, I just don't understand why gays have to be "open". Who really cares? Do they feel they need to be "open" so that they can broadcast their gayness so that others of their ilk can find them, kind of like Elk bugling from mountain tops in search of a mate? Or, maybe they are tired of the subtle approaches of heterosexuals who are unaware of their sexual preference.
You're absolutely correct, they are attention whores who feel neglected, no law passed will change the views of anyone about queers, and the law of unintended consequences will prevail.
100 years from now queers will be virtually non existent after the genetic flaw is found and eliminated
how soon we forget "hate crimes"....That aspect of the law has changed, they are a protected minority remember..you're better off killing your mother than killing a queer.
My understanding is that ending DADT doesn't force the military to change their policy, it just allows them to, and that the military intends to take up to a year to figure out what they're going to do in terms of moving away from it.
The most vocal person I've heard comment on moving past DADT is the chairman of the joint chiefs
I disagree with the vote because it's merely a political ploy. If the government wants to end DADT, they are certainly able to do it. But doing it before the military works out the best timetable for implementation is stupid.
It becomes a ploy to appease a portion of the electorate if done as a gesture, or it becomes a foolish undermining of the miltary if imposed willy nilly.
Fighting for equal rights isn't stupid. But to allow yourselves to be fodder for politicians, in this day and age, is ignorant of the damage that uncaring assholes can do to your cause.
Democrat politicians care as much about gays as republicans do. Democrats just see the bling$$$ in supporting it and feel the political pressure to pay lip service or lose the voter base. Their civil rights are completely irrelevant to the issue at hand.
The simple reality here is that asking an organization if they are ready to recognize basic human rights, especially the military, doesn't really work that well. Imagine if statistics and opinion had been followed for the integration of 'colored' men.
