Asian films you recommend

I see you mentioned all South Korean films, so my list is for Korean films:

Sympathy For Mr Vengence
Sympathy For Lady Vengence

Both of these are in the trilogy with Oldboy.

The Host
Memories of Murder
The President's Last Bang
Shiri
Public Enemy(there is a sequel too, yet to see it though)
My Sassy Girl, try WinRABtruck if you enjoy My Sassy Girl
The Big Swindle
Taegukgi
Joint Security Area
A Tale of Two Sisters - fantastic
The President's Barber

Take a look at anything by the director Ki-duk Kim, has some very good films but some of his films are a bit disappointing too, think The Coast Guard was one I thought was a bore. Things like The Isle, and Samaria are fantastic.

Marathon is decent.
Nowhere To Hide
Spiderforest

Greenfish - yet to see this, but it's suppose to be one of the best out of Korea.

Crying Fist - if into boxing/fighting

Typhoon - Decent but nothing mindblowing

The Chaser

Ooooo Save The Green Planet too.

There you go.

If you liked the long version of Dumplings then you might want to check the three extemes release containing the short version plus two others - can't remember what the DVD is called in the UK as they messed with the numbering. Oldboy is part of a theme-based series, so you could check the other two (although they aren't as mainstream).

Here's a random list of good films (IMO) from different genres, although mostly horror: Tale of Two Sisters, Taegukgi (aka Brotherhood), Dark Water, the Ring films, My Sassy Girl, Il Mare, Battle Royale, Audition, Shutter, Quiet Family, Infernal Affairs series, the Ju-on films, etc... Just make sure to avoid the remakes, which often have the same names.

Apart from the sixty odd Jackie Chan films I have ( :o ) (though you probably aren't on about kung-fu movies), there are some incredibly good Asian films.

My faves:

Oldboy
Battle Royale
Zatoichi
Hana-Bi

Some people rave about Seven Samurai, but I thought it was rubbish. It's only when you consider how long ago it was made that you can kind of appreciate it.

My first post was Chinese films.

These are Japanese:

Black rain (Kuroi ame)
Tokyo Story
Seven Samurai (sorry, but I think it's brilliant!)
Hadashi no Gen (animation)
Yojimbo

Not much to add to the list - some good choices there. I'll add:

Ong-Bak
Yellow Earth
Ran (Kurosawa's stunning adaptation of King Lear)
Hard Boiled

Ong-Bak and Warrior King are two movies that say one thing:

There's a new martial arts legend in town, and his name is Tony Jaa. Brilliant films. Brilliant.

I thought Hard Boiled was real shit, though. So many people getting shot, and things exploding - by the end, I was bored stiff, and that rarely happens to me with action films.

Someone mentioned Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For me, that's Chow Yun Obese's best film. It's a heartbreaker with incredible action.

Here are a few more:

The Eye
SworRABman
Boiling Point
Violent Cop
Sonatine
Brother
Samaritan Girl
3 Iron
One Night In Mongkok
A Better Tomorrow
Bullet In The Head
R Point
In The Mood For Love
City On Fire

Just a few there to keep you going, with a mixture of some Korean and Japanese in there

Faye is cute as a button.

One of my all time faves. I recently watched Wong's My Blueberry Nights with Norah Jones. Quite enjoyed it and has that dreamy feel to it.

Some other faves are A Better Tomorrow. Also check out the sequel.

"You don't like my rice??!, to you rice is nothing, for us Chinese rice is like family. Eat the rice!"

If you fancy a good cry, check out Chow Yun Fat in a totally different fair in All About Ah Long. I wept like a baby.
