angel - ah yes - something I'd forgotten is how expensive it is to live there. Getting Asian film DVDs for $20 sounds outrageous to me, but I know it's reasonable there.
isy - I love Highway 61 but Last Night is a far superior movie in terms of global appeal and overall message, not to mention tension, surprise, drama, humor, and genuine emotional highs and lows (and highs again). I'd definitely recommend Last Night over Highway 61 if you're going to see either (but you should see both ).
Isy I heard NANA is good. Isnt their going to be a NANA 2? or something. I too have a lot in my "to be watched" pile. Its not going down but it seems more are added :sigh:
all in all 'the promise' is just ok.........some of the visuals are really stunning and beautiful...........but some of the computer generated images (cgi) are truly horrible......
out of the 3 films in the trilogy 'oldboy' is my favorite too.....'sympathy for mr vengeance' started out slow and then it caught my interest.....by far it's a better film than '.....lady vengeance'......
i saw 'clean' the other day.....i was surprised how strong, or at least that's what i thought, maggie's "english" accent was in the film......i'm too lazy to post my thoughts about the film all over again in this thread....so this is what i said about 'clean' in the "what was the last film you saw in a theater" thread yesterday.....
Good question. I've been dying to watch Silmido for a long time.
Also, other movies directed by the guy from 3iron and Samaria.
And many more I can't remember right now.
Can you, please, tell us if you liked it?
It's in a theater in my town and I'm not sure about watching it or not. The trailer didn't appeal at all to me. But I don't know anyone who has seen it so I haven't heard any opinions about it.
Yeppers! Native San Franciscan - a rare breed. Japan Town is off of Geary Street (coincidentally just a few blocks from where I was born ) - runs part of the length of it, and close to Nob Hill. It's not quite as big as China Town, which goes on forever! But it's fairly substantial.
Also, I work near the Oakland Chinatown, with 3 really great DVD/VCD stores nearby. It's pretty much where I find all my films.
I love the original Shall We Dance - saw it in the theater when it came out, years ago.
A movie from the Philipines? You know, aside from the dramas I occasionally watch on the Asian channels here, I don't think I've actually seen a film from the Philipines before...
mukooh oh we would definitely miss your insights if and when you do decide. I learned a lot more about Asian films and films in general from you. One of my sister's class this summer is Approaches to Pop Film. I hope they watch more Asian films.
Isy ITA. Its a surprise that you loved the film because I know how much you dislike 2 of the stars there. Would you believe I have been carting that dvd for the past 3 weeks and I havent been able to watch it. But I am not giving it to anyone else until I have seen it
well there a few exceptions to the usual but mostly indie and digital films which big companies arent ready to support just yet. I hope we will see more in the future.
angel_boogiepop my personal recommendation would be Full House (Rain/Song Hye Gyo) and Goong/Palace (Joo Ji Hoon/Yoon Eun Hye). These are worth the money. These are the 2 that Isy and I would discuss non-stop :lmao: while watching.
Oh Oh Isy when Nobody Knows and Millionaire's First Love get to me I should have a towel ready then.
The Promise is I think being released today. I want to watch it.
I was a bit apprehensive about Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves remaking "Il Mare" but the trailers of "The Lakehouse" actually looks good but then again I can fully tell if its such a good thing after watching the film if it was true to "Il Mare" or not. I just hope they made a conscious effort to be true to the original film and I think they should promote it as a remake. Maybe that way if people like "The Lakehouse" they will be encouraged to get hold of a copy of "Il Mare"
I just saw "A Tale of Two Sisters" finally!
I loved it. First, it made jump off my chair at least twice. It was creepy! I didn't know what was going on and the atmosphere was scary.
I loved the story, the actresses and the cinematography (the colours were amazing).
Mukooh - i remember you saying the effects were good. but i wasnt sure if you liked The Promise overall.
re: Lady Vengeance - i havent seen Mr Vengeance still! my cousin has the dvd you sent me. Old Boy seems to be the perennial fave....
Anabela and shrrshrr re: A Better Tomorrow - i remember seeing this more than 10 years ago. i cant even remember the storyline. i have to rewatch.
kris - my brother said Acacia didnt make much sense. which is why i wont be watching it.
i havent seen A Tale of 2 Sisters still.
i want to see the thai film Shutter though....
i havent watched any movies lately, been busy with the japanese dramas. :lol:i'll be watching Il Mare soon.... since The Lakehouse is coming out and i might watch it and compare as well.
