Asian Cinema Thread #7 - so much more than just action flicks and anime!

I'm not really sure if I should trust Hollywood remakes of original flicks, especially with Asian movies. The Ring and The Grudge didn't really do wonders for me (even if the one who directed/produced The Grudge was the one who worked with the original movie).

I love A Tale of Two Sisters. I really do. I'm not sure how it would be when they Amercanize it.
 
Wow! Thats a lot! what have you watched so far? Like **isy*** I have a ton of movies and series to watch too but havent had the time to do so.

has anyone heard of the movie "Red Doors"? Its an Asian-american film. sorry :blush: thats all I know for now. I just saw a snippet of it from MTV Chi.
 
Honestly I hope you don't leave, but I understand why you would. (and I'm staying, FYI) It's true that it's very different discussing films in person, and the conversation can be more organic, but for me at least I'm far more likely to discover a diverse film culture on-line than I am around here, and that's saying something (considering I live in arguably the most diverse place on earth).

But as I said, if you leave I understand - I'll just miss you terribly on the boards. I plan on keeping in touch, though.

Just look at this thread - I've gained so much film knowledge from this thread alone, even though my friends are professional journalists and work in the Asian film industry. Sure, I get first dibs on original content, but they have their own biases, etc. This format expands on that exposure.

Just sayin'... ;)
 
I've already seen The King and The Clown three times... and I only saw it for the first time yesterday. Wow, I love that film. I really hope it gets nominated for an Oscar (it's South Korea's official entry).

no i haven't seen even the trailer for 'clean' in a theater yet.....i believe the release date is sometime within the next couple of months?...

i kind of like the look of the poster though....very simple...very plain...yet somehow very moving....

i've been mostly just lurking lately...what with fanforum continuing to go down on a regular basis...and threads always disappearing.....i'm not sure how much longer i'm going to continue posting on fanforum....when i do quit posting i'll pm my e-mail address to those of you that would like to stay in touch......lately i've been doing more face to face discussions of film.......it's so much more enriching.......to see someone talking about films, to see it in their eyes....friends of mine say that i really become more animated, passionate and emotional when i talk to them about films....it's because i love them so much....i just seem to look at films a little bit differently now then i did before.....

i almost went to see 'the promise' the other day.....even though i've had the dvd for about 6 months now....but at the last minute i changed my mind....from what i understand the theatrical release, here in the us, is 25 minutes shorter than the original.....and to tell you the truth...while i enjoyed the story and the visuals.....some of the cgi was just horrible.......

hi....Anabela....in regards to 'drawing restraint 9'....if i were you i would pass on the film.....it's not horribly bad...nor is it very good........i think it's more of a visual experiment more than a movie and the visuals imo are just ok......i kept on waiting for something to happen in the film....and i kept on waiting and waiting.....the only thing that i found interesting in the film was when the two "occidentals" developed blow holes and were in a pool slicing each other up with knives, eating each others flesh.......metaphorically, i guess it had something to do with whaling......and that scene was almost at the end of the film......also there is no dialogue for the first hour and a half of the film......maybe 6 or 7 lines....then nothing more......not that that bothered me that much, but if your waiting for some kind of explanation as to why things are happening in this film, your not going to get that.....i just had extra time and money to spend so that's why i saw it.......mukooh

I've heard of Full House...they show it...or used to show it. But I never got around to watch it because my mom has already taken over the tv...to watch Korean Soap Operas :pout: :lol:

I think the series I've actually watched from beginning to end was Winter Sonata :sigh: I loved the series and I love love love love love the theme song. I burned it on to my CD and I love Jun-Sang :drool:

isy- Yup, I like horror movies. I think most of my Japanese/Korean collection consists of horror movies. (My cousin constantly complains that I need something by horror :lol: )
 
It does go on forever - but it's all good (I love Chinatown). :lol:

So Filipino movies - do you all remember Xander1600? Haven't seen him posting in a while but he used to attend film festivals and report back to us. That was the only way I heard about most of those films.

But yes, I'm familiar with The Debut. :)

pucca - I think I'll see if NetFlix carries any of those. I love the older cultural dramas!
 
I saw Tale of Two Sisters some months ago and loved it. I wonder how the Hollywood remake will be. I don't expect anything special, really.
 
This week, a korean movie will be released in my country. It's Samaria by Kim Ki-Duk. I can't wait to see it, considering how much I loved 3 Iron.
I'll later post my thoughts about the movie.
 
Just thought I'd give the thread a bump ... I generally just lurk since I'm more prone to watch drama series than movies ... but anyways, I've been on a chinese/korean drama series binge. I've finished like 4 series in a month ... so I was wondering are there any good recommendations for any movies that been out lately?

The last Asian film I've watched is a Korean flick starring Moon Geun Young about dancing, Innocent Steps. Story is predictable but it's a feel good movie and I love the dancing.
 
shrr- Yeah, it's kinda expensive to live here. Actually, $20 ($19.99 + tax) isn't that bad at the store I go to. Tower Records and other places range it from $22-$29 (and about $26 or a little more on the extreme film labels like A Tale of Two Sisters). I know there are a few states that have no tax at all.

isy-Really? Cool! Er..which island? Cause shrr's folks are at the Big Island, I'm in Oahu :look: And I'll add you in a bit after I type this. :D
 
Frankly Dennis Trillo is one of the reasons aside from the story why I wanted to watch it.

Come to think of it I also liked the old Filipino movies... my aunts and I were talking about it last night so we might list them down and ask my mom to get it ex: Hihintayin kita sa langit, Una kang naging akin, Bituing walang ningning and others :lol:
 
Rai - i was surprised i like Blue Moon since i despise Mark/Jennylyn, but really, i loved Dennis Trillo there. i'm joining the Dennis Trillo fan club now. :rotfl: but the script was great, although the cinematography could be better. :)

i actually realized i liked a lot of the old Filipino movies.....:rotfl: i mean, the ones we saw growing up in the 80s/90s. :lol:

Angel Boogiepop - i actually haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned. although my brother said Acacia was weird. i take it you like horror movies? :lol: one movie i've been wanting to see is Shutter - a thai movie.

as for korean tv dramas - my favorites are Full House , Goong, Sassy Girl Chunhyang (not to be confused with Chunhyang the movie), My Name is Kim Sam Soon . :) i watch a lot of korean movies though. :)

Shrrshrr - chinatown in SF seems to have no end. :lol: but its always a lively place to visit. :)

as for Philippine/Filipino movies, the industy is struggling so there are very few recent ones that are really good. but one of the movies i'd recommend also is The Debut , which was made in US. that somewhat depicts the life of a filipino-american.....

i saw Il Mare last weekend. it was very good. i loved it! i hope The Lake House didnt change it much.

one of my aunt's comments after watching it with me was : "well Il Mare has a better mailbox than what we've seen in the trailer for The Lake house" . :lol:
 
Isy: I'm surprised you haven't seen A Tale of Two Sisters. Everybody talked so much about that movie a while ago, I thought I was the only on who hadn't seen it.

Guys, what asian movies do you recommend me to watch in the next weeks?
