Anabela - i've read good things about Water . :)

i'm dont have much recommendations since all of my dvds are pretty much in the to be read pile.

Mukooh - aww... :hug: well i hope you don't leave since you are one of the very few that livens up this thread. actually there was one FForumer who used to do the Asian Cinema thread, and she/he vanished, so i kind of continued to do it to further asian cinema discussions. at any rate, i'll respect whatever decision you have. :)

as for The Promise - i reallllyy need to get on watching it.

as for Clean , Netflix has the dvd already, i'll put it in my 1,000 dvd queue (ha! just kidding). :P but one of the recent movies i rented (and will watch later tonight) is Neighbour #13 .

Anabela - i liked Samaria too, but 3-iron remains to be my fave Kim Ki Duk movie. :)

i havent been watching much movies. i have a lot piled up, so i do hope to give a bit of contributions here. don't want this board to die out on us!

Korea: 'Secret Sunshine' Aims for Oscar

A Korean film that won actress Jeon Do-yeon top honors at this year's Cannes Film Festival will be the nation's submission for the Academy Awards next spring in the category for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Korean Film Council announced Monday that the choice of "Secret Sunshine" was made by six judges who assessed the overall quality, distribution capacity and public recognition of three films submitted for consideration.

The panel said they did not simply evaluate quality but chose the film they deemed most suitable to the U.S. awards ceremony's selection process. They described "Secret Sunshine" as a human story of one person's struggles with life which seemed most appropriate for the awards as it is built on Jeon's strong emotional performance.

The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, is one of the most prominent and most watched annual film awards ceremonies in the world. Each country is allowed to submit one film for consideration in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Korea has yet to take home an Oscar for best foreign film.

Award season is just around the corner and I am really excited for it. I love that not only Asian Cinema but also Asian actors are being recognized again. :yay:
 
I like Emily Browning too. She was great in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

I might give it a chance. Who knows. But I've seen 15 minutes of The Ring in English and...well...:no:
 
I'm glad this thread is back on the first page because I'm a big fan of Asian cinema :love: I gravitate towards J-Horror and wuxia, but I'll give anything a try.

Anyway, I don't think American remakes of Asian flicks translate well because they're always missing the cultural aspects of the originals :\

I finally saw Samaria by Kim Ki-duk.
I was expecting a lot from this movie because this was the same guy who directed 3 Iron. And I loved it! It's a very strong movie and yet it's beautiful and even elegant.
It's nothing like 3 Iron and yet the beauty and elegance are very similar.
I don't want to give away the story, I think you should discover everything as you see the movie.
I can't believe this movie was only released in my country's theaters now.
 
What I am scared is that it might be just another "entertaining" film and people will forget about it, as opposed to the original which is masterfully made.

I will see the remake though because I like Emily Browning. And I know I should not judge before it is out so I am sorry about that.

starting may 12th.....'lady vengeance'.....this is the final film of a trilogy, all based on revenge, by korean director chan-wook park.................while i have film on dvd at home (thanks ***isy***)....i still haven't watched it.....so i'll being seeing this on friday...

today i'll be seeing 'drawing restraint 9'.......which might be of interest to some of the posters on this thread, because it stars a number of japanese actors.....it's a 2:15 minute film with hardly any dialogue, well at least for the first 90 minutes....

the plot.........
The movie takes place aboard the real-life Japanese whaling ship, now a research vessel, the Nisshin Maru, one of the last built before the international ban on whaling took effect. The film begins with Will Oldham singing text of letters from postwar Japan as a woman wraps a fossil, then follows the two "occidental guests" as they make their separate ways onboard the ship. Once they arrive, they are ministered to and groomed in preparation for a traditional Shinto wedding. Meanwhile, on deck, the crew busies itself with the petroleum jelly mold. After the ceremony, the ship is rocked by a storm, and the Vaseline begins to melt and seep into the cabins below. Flooded by viscous liquid, the occidental guests join in a grisly but tender love-death, slicing at one another's lower extremities with flensing knives and breathing through spouts on the backs of their necks.

I just noticed that "A Tale of Two Sisters" will be released this week in my country. :) I must see it as fast as I can.

I'm sorry I haven't been posting. I haven't been paying much attention to asian movies.

But yesterday I watched Water, an indian movie and it impressed me a lot. It was about the living conditions of the widows in India and it was quite sad, romantic and sometimes even funny.
Beautifully done, wonderful music, great photography and an eye-opener film. I wished all indian movies were like this one.

I was considering seeing it but now I will only go if I have nothing else better to do. I don't pay for tickets but I don't have that much free time and I have to choose carefuly the movies I'm going to see.

rai - yeah theres talks for NANA2. NANA is a long serialized manga anyway in Japan so it can be done.

speaking of manga turned movies, i also want Death Note . :)

so i've finally watched more asian movies, like ang pagdadalaga ni maximo oliveros . i've also made a short bit of review on The Departed and gushed upon my eternal love for Infernal Affairs . and also Love Letter . it's on my LJ if anyone is interested. jusy click the ME part on my sig. :D

Angel (i'll shortcut it if its fine w/you.. :lol: ) - where are you from? Raissa ilovepucca and i watched Full House on a local channel here in Los Angeles more than a year ago....
 
My friend watches a lot of korean and japanese stuff, so I borrowed two korean dramas from her. The more popular ones I guess, since she's been trying to get me to watch for a long time. I watched "Autumn Tale" and "Full House" both starring Song Hye Kyo. Autumn Tale was so sad and thought some of the scenes could been shot a different way, but it was still great. I came to reallie like Won Bin in that role even though he was sorta the jackass in the beginning. Full House was like completely the opposite of the Autumn Tale. Full House was entertaining and fun. Her character and Rain's character were zainy and spazzy which was hilarious.

I also just finished a chinese drama with Shawn Yue, Kristy Yang, Petrina Fung, and Alex Fong, called "Phoenix from the Ashes". It's because of this series that I'm completely obsessed with Shawn Yue. Floved his character in this drama. Although it starts extremely slow, it starts picking up towards the middle and it doesn't let up until the end. So due to this newly liking of Shawn Yue, I went to go buy some of his other movies which included one of his first films with the Twins girls called "Just One Look". I'm excited to watch that one since it looks like a nice little romantic comedy set among one of the lovelier places in Hong Kong, Cheung Chau.
