Artistic looking films for me to Sound Design

Is anyone deep into artistic film?

I need to strip a clip of around 10 minutes of all audio and then add sound myself. . . this can be abstract sound such as random noise-like sounRAB to sound effects that mimic on screen events.

I was thinking of taking an old silent film such as laurel and hardy - but does anyone have any good movies in colour that just use imagery and not dialogue (as I would much rather stick to sound design only and not have to deal with adding voice overs :) )

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

I've been looking on youtube for some ideas.

Just remembered this thread. haha. :D

Not exactly popular - I thought you people would have taste in terms of artistic looking film.

I took some clips from the Ring which were very interesting for design as its quite dark, arty and lacks speech and script in the parts I used.

Any others would be welcomed though. :)

Both black and white but an obvious couple I guess would be Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Tod Browning's Freaks.
as for colour, Eastwood's film High Plains Drifter gets a little surreal towarRAB the end with not much dialogue, or for something darker Event Horizon

also maybe worth a look if you dont mind sticking to black and white is the Salvador Dali dream sequence from Hitchcock's film Spellbound

I've found High Plains Drifter, and Metropolis on DVD in HMV - so I'll pop down and buy them tomorrow.

I must say even from small previews, Metropolis looks absolutely perfect in terms of material to work with :)

The Dali dream sequence is VERY freaky - and presumably quite innovative for it's time, I think it's slightly too short to use.

Metropolis will definitely give me plenty to work with, and I'll be watching EastwooRAB film tomorrow night also.

Cheers for the suggestions again. :)

Didn't realise you was going to buy the films, thought maybe just renting.
But Metropolis is a classic anyway, and sure you'll enjoy it even if it's no good for your project, and glad to see High Plains Drifter isn't too much on HMV

A single disc version of Metropolis was given away in the newspapers a while ago, so maybe a few cheap ones on e-bay and places like that.

Missed this first time round, sorry.

Have you thought about animated films?
Les Triplettes de Belleville is a french animation and may suit your neeRAB, it's a bizarre film and has some trippy sequences for you to play around with.
As far as creepy visuals, Dark City has some excellent scenes as well as some amazing sound design (just a shame about the ending) that may inspire you.
I'm usually sat with my guitar if i'm watching the tv and i'm either playing along with the adverts (not to be done in public especially the Sheila's wheel commercial:o) or have the tv muted and playing my own incidental music, which is annoying for everyone but me:D

I'll post some more ideas when i think of them, and it may be simpler for you to hit Youtube for clips or certain streaming sites rather than going out to buy every film mentioned:) Just an idea.

Good luck with the project.

On a side note, i often tinker with Premiere Pro myself and have found the Videocopilot range of sound banks to be excellent, Pro scores and designer sound effects in particular.

2046 & Im in The Mood for Love have some stunning cinemaphotography, along with Oldboy & Beat Kateshi Kitanos Sonnatine

Delicatesen has some very surreal moments.

:)
