A Nassau County police officer was fatally shot at the scene of a traffic accident on the Cross Island Parkway in Queens today. Another person was also shot and killed in the incident.The officer, identified by Newsday as Arthur Lopez, reportedly approached the accident scene just after 11 a.m. near 241st Street and Jamaica Avenue. A suspect in the car shot and killed the cop before running over to another car where he shot and killed the driver before fleeing in the vehicle.
Lopez, part of the Emergency Services Unit, died at North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital. He was an eight-year veteran of the force.
Police, some in riot gear, are looking for the suspect in Queens. Groups of officers are searching door-to-door.
