Art vs. Writing/English... what is better to go to college for?

Well, basically my whole life I have been a slacker, expect in studies that interest me. My GPA for freshman year was 3.2, and sophomore, 3.5. But now that I have started Jr. year I am working really hard to earn straight A's and am taking 3 AP classes. I have also been thinking seriously about what colleges I want to go to. I really want to go to art school, my dream is to go to RISD (Rhode Island school of Design), but I really love writing and English too. The thing is I am not sure if I am really good at writing, well my teachers say I am, but that is just essays, I want to do creative writing. And my whole life I have had a talent for art (not trying to be big-headed, just stating a fact) and people have encouraged me to pursue a career as an artist. My parents are not too keen on either. They seem to be convinced that getting a degree for either will not help me get a job. Is this true? Jobs I would like to have would be like, working as a screenwriter or journalist or animator or graphic designer.

(Sorry if this was all over the place, I just am not sure what I should do with my future!)
 
You don't need to go to college to be a great writer. In fact Jennifer Weiner, a successful novelist has said that its a waste of time to go to college for writing. She said that writers learn best by reading various genres of books and by writing. You only get better at writing by writing a lot.

Your parents are wrong. There are lots of opportunities in journalism, there are also lots of opportunities for graphic designers, animators and web designers. There is a whole field of successful artists out there. These artists got successful because they worked hard to get good at art, not only that but they know how to be social and how to deal with people.

They know how to market themselves in their interviews, portfolios, and how to work well with others. Parents love their children but parents are often wrong that artists end up starving. That's not true.
