Art & primary research?

For art, what exactly am I supposed to gather for primary research? My project brief vaguely says "research you theme from primary(drawings, paintings, photography etc) and secondary material (internet, newspapers, books, magazines, tv etc). What do they mean by drawings and paintings, to look at other artists paintings or make my own. If i look at other peoples I don't understand how that is primary because it's been seen before, and if it means making my own then that isn't even researching. What can I do for primary research in art??
