fri i enlisted in the army for 4 1/2 years. later that evening when i was looking at my paper work it states that im obligated to do 4 1/2 years active and 3 1/2 years reserve. Im pretty sure that i did NOT tell them to give me reserve. Its to late, i already signed that contract!

Know any good lawyers i could call?
it says im obligated to do 8 years! my recruiter told me im only doing 4 1/2 years!
oh good ty!! so its only 4 1/2 years ok guys thanks!

The good news is that you are enlisted in the Inactive Reserve / DEP program if you have to wait for your basic training date. You are not legally obligated to DEP or any contract until you sign the one before you leave MEPS on your ship date. The bad news is if you decide not to go through with DEP the Army will not accept you for enlistment again, and your chances of being accepted by other branches of service will be hampered due to your DEP loss status.

Also, all military contracts are 8 years in length if you include the reserve component. The reserve component is usually mandatory across all services, most people just resign back into Active Duty once their Active Duty portion of their contract ends.

ALL members of the military sign for 4 years active & 4 year in the IRR(Inactive ready reserve). The IRR is a list of people they can recall if things get really bad. Has not been used since the early years of the Iraq war. We have plenty of manpower now. Your not hoodwinked, just read the fine print.

Sounds like you got it all figured out. Remember for later that you were told all this at MEPS. You signed a document stating that you were told all this. You can find that in your packet. Don't be so quick to accuse someone of lying to you. Good luck at BCT!!

The reserve part is INACTIVE RESERVE. You don't do anything, but you are on the READY RESERVE list. You'd be one of the last to be called if need be. It's standard.
