ARGH! N78 NO Internet Call option!

Well I had a very exciting morning as i received a new N78-3 from SNTraders (who I HIGHLY recommend, by the way... Nadia really went out of her way to help me get the phone today so I could have it for a trip next week. Two Thumbs UP!)

The phone itself was really top notch. I must have gotten a good one because all the bad points that I've read about (back cover, keypad etc) were just fine.

So I'm flying high until I go to configure my SIP and Internet Call profiles. Well the SIP settings are there, but NO Internet Call profiles! So I enter a number to dial like i used to on my N95 and hit Options and look for a Internet Call option, but all I got is Voice Call and Video Call!

Please tell me there's a way do download that functionality WITHOUT installing the Gizmo or Fring or whatever 3rd party app. I just want to use the built in S60 functionality.

Did you input the SIP settings? You see the internet call option only after that. Not sure why Nokia put SIP settings without internet call profile? They did the same in N91

yea, i put the settings in and it created a profile, but it says Unregistered under the profile name and there isn't any option in the menu to tel it to register.

i was following this proceedure:

i looked at gizmo's site and they didn't have N78 listed as a phone in their download selector. i doubt they make custom apps for each phone so maybe i'll just try a similar versioned app for a different phone and see if it works.

the AAS review clearly says the SIP profile is not present on that n78 too. so as of now it looks like SIP calling is totally removed from the n78. maybe because of the carrier relationships with this particular phone....i.e. ATT in the US, etc.

Do you see "Menu>>Tools>>Settings>>Connections>>Internet tel.
"? If you don't have that option, then you can't make internet calls.

well maybe i'm misreading this, but from the new n78 review posted today, it seems to be gone. a few angry comments about it after the review too. i quoted the part i read...maybe i misinterpreted it...

what handset did you pick from the list when you downloaded fring? N78 isnt on there. are there any disadvantages to using this extra step? is it more difficult to make/receive calls? it would be pretty tough to beat the tight integration that the N95 had.

ok, i downloaded the fring software for symbian 9.2 (there wasn't one for 9.3 yet) and it worked. i set it up to talk to my gizmo account and was able to make a gizmo out call.

the fring client seems to work well, but i don't know if it's going to be as good as the built in S60 VOIP that my N95 had.

That sounds like great news, but i'm about to sell my 4 day old N78 because it DOESN'T have VOIP! If you're pretty sure it will be added later, please say so, cuz I would definitely keep it if VOIP comes soon in a FW update... just want a little reassurance because this was meant to replace my (almost perfect) E51.

I just downloaded and installed Fring from the N78 web browser, filled in my SIP profile with my SIP provider and now I can make and receive calls through wifi on N78.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N95-3: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaN95_8GB-3/31.2.007; Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413)

it will never be as good as native sip because now you are going thru fring servers and that definetly adds latency and quality degradation.
With native nokia sip you are directly connected to sip registrar server.
This is just bad that nokia is removing that. I hope nokia n97 will have that option
