Those nitwits probably did this deliberately to put themselves at the center of attention.
They know that Iran really does not want the public scrutiny they would receive if they were harsh with these stupid kids.
These kids also know that this is a story that the media cannot ignore.
Essentially these stupid kids have created an enormous amount of media attention for themselves, and they will probably cash in on all of that media attention when they are eventually released.
I cannot believe some of the stupid things that people do to get attention for themselves.

They weren't hiking in Iran. They were hiking in Kurdish Iraq along the Iranian border which is relatively peaceful. Obviously, they didn't even know hiking 101 which is at least have GPS and a map.
They were doing something questionable I think . I believe they were trying to get their 15 minutes of fame somehow . I'm glad they got the crap scared out of them . It was also great to see the stupid girl having to cover her hair . How long before Oprah , the book tour , etc... douches
