Aren't Mercedes and BMWs safer than Toyota or Honda?

I am in tenth grade, and am looking at my first car.
I am probably going to get a Mercedes SLK.
My question is,
Aren't the German luxury cars built better than the Japanese cars.

I mean, look what happened here.
