Area code reset?

I just got a G1 from my friend and unlocked it to be used on AT&T. Everything seems to be working pretty fine except for the fact that for some contacts when I go to text them the area code gets deleted. When I text them at first, I can text them. But when I close out of the thread and text someone else, and then go back to reply to the other person, the phone takes away the area code.

So for example. I text 555-555-5555...

Then when I go back to text, I'm now texting 555-5555

AT&T doesn't like this at all... lol I get a text back immediately saying it was an invalid number and that I need to input the area code as well with the phone number.

With some people it works just fine and the area code does not do this.

With others though, it keeps doing this and I have to go back and compose a whole new thread everytime I want to text.

Have you tried entering the contacts with the USA 1 before the number? I have noticed in the past (never thought phones still did this) if you didn't put in a 1 the phone would think you didn't need to dial an area code. All my entries are + followed by country code and number. I have G1, not rooted, 1.6.
