Are you sharing?

Yeah thats true,
I think many freeloaders dont care about the technology
of p2p and their development. so they dont bother themselves
to check on pages like this.

100% of respondents to the poll claim to be sharing.

I am not trying to be very pessimistic here but I would suggest that it would be better to work from the idea that maybe 10% of users regularly share nearly all of the files that they have - and let optimism raise the number from there.
I present for sharing a certain number of completely unique files which are extremely popular - they have been downloaded in 1,000s - When I do a search for these same files the returns are very small, if any! (Although I did one time have 112 hits on them!)
But, there is no way to make any positive changes with any client that involves denying freeloaders - Any law that was strongly introduced would have the effect of damaging the network as a whole.
It is something which must simply be accepted as part of normal human behaviour. It must also be accepted that this is an argument which is mostly based on emotion and a feeling of unfairness.
Better to just get on with it all and shift some IT, right?
Don't fret

Yes, I share, and I would like to share more. Here's a copy of a post (slighly edited) I did in the Xolox support forum:
-----------------------------------------------
Me too, just like Wolf, can only keep on my hard drives a small fraction of what I have to share (programs). What would be useful is a page/site of requests, especially for rare hard to find stuff.

That way, people like me, Wolf and others having a lot of stuff to share could go there to see what people are looking for but have trouble finding, and if we have it, we could then put it temporarily on our hard drives.

To be useful, the list would have to be maintained somehow. Ideally, the people having put the requests would be able to delete them once they got what they requested, so the "sharers" could delete the stuff from the hard drive.

What do you think? Could this be the next step in file sharing?

Well, now there's one who admits it. I think the proportion would be 1/3, 1/4 or even smaller.

Yes, I did see your other post.
I was going to reply later, but as I am browsing for 'naughties' I see you again here -

There are serious legal issues which would need to be considered regarding your proposal. Anything which diminishes the anonymity of responsibility within the Gnutella Network is bad.

Thx sweet troll. So this means that between 50%-100% do not share, 'only a few mp3s' isn't enough, I estimate 80-90 do not really share. You feel it when you download, busy, busy, busy.

70% of gnutella users dont share.

Say everyone on gnutella shared 50 files - the result would be AMAZING speeds downloading and more search results than one could dream of; however, as long as clients like bearshare make it the easiest thing in the world to freeload, this will never happen..

Tis a sad reality..

Yeah,
Thats just human.
Its a human instinct to be selfish and greedy.
Only the strongest survive, remember Darwin?

Thats a reason why Communism failed and
why Gnutella WILL fail sooner or later

people here are community oriented, freeloaders just want their FREE files, so figure this poll is 10% of all users and the rest are lame *** leeches

I am soooo bored with P2P right now I am not sharing at all because I don't even run the program anymore. I dl'd a few naked people doing the wild thing, got a few songs, but it's easier to just listen to the radio and let them play the songs, and now I am boooooored!! someone please do something new so I can get interested again !

Maybe it would be good to ask who is sharing and if your are behind a firewall or not.

If you like to know which files are very popular you can check at www.gnutellameter.com to see which search terms are popular. Also the client Phex displays you a statistic how often other users search for your files.

Gamer, where did you get those numbers from? I hope you don't rely on that almost 2 year-old paper "Freeride on Gnutella" (or whatever it's called). It's one of the few papers on that topic I've ever found and the numbers aren't true anymore.

You can easily modify an open source client to collect up-to-date data from PONGs.

I did that and no matter what configuration I used (connecting to limewire hosts, morpheus hosts or any other clients), never, more than 25% of the PONGs came from hosts not sharing any files. QueryReplies indicated that less than 15% of all clients sharing files, never had a successful upload. That means at least 64% of all clients are actively sharing files. My (more optimistic) guess is that it's more like 70% to 75%.

Well, let's see...

There'sd a big diiference between 'I'm sharing' and 'I'm letting other people download from me. There are a lot of users that with the ecuse of 'I have a firewall' don't let anybody download from them. And it's not impossible to do so.

You're one greedy s... aren't you? Sharing just a few mp3s (like 10 - 20) is more than enough to make a difference.

Now, now. Let's stop this naughty stuff before it grows, right boys?
