Are you fooled by CGI or do you see something as real?

I mean, do you see computer graphics - moving, or do you see something that is so brilliant that it looks real?

I watched Avatar and just saw some Computerised aliens prancing around and the same goes for other CGI fests we get these days.

CGI is used constantly in the most unexpected of scenes.

Does anyone remember the scene in Constantine when the bald dude is drinking out of the bottle in the shop and it runs down his chin and eventually on the floor?

Every single piece of wet matter in that scene was CGI. Even the smashed liquid on the floor afterwarRAB, even when its running down his chin.

Wasn't until I saw the HD-DVD I realised it was fake.

You would be amazed at how much CGI is actually used.

I kept forgetting that the Avatar aliens were CGI then I'd remember and focus on it. That's the first time I've come close to believing it.

when i first saw Jurassic Park at the cinema - the scene where the T-Rex climbs out of the pit - i genuinely beleived it was some sort of animatronic! i couldnt beleive it was cgi because it "looked too good" .

of course i now relise that i was stupid back then.

There are hundreRAB of CGI touch-ups in films these days that you haven't the slightest clue they're not real they're so ubiquitous. When you see a T-Rex stomping about you know it can't be anything but CGI, but you totally miss the inserted backgrounRAB and object removals going on all the time these days. So, yes, you are being constantly fooled by CGI work.

There are loaRAB of movies with CGI that you don't notice. They just remove or add things in the background.

Action films with big CGI chase sequences (Phantom Menace, Matrix Reloaded, Die Hard 4, etc.) just look like computer games. The technology isn't good enough.

Exactly. I'm a sci-fi fan and have new started to lose interest in the films. Too much attantion is being put on CGI over storyline, actual performances and in some cases believability.

I can watch cheap looking crap like Irwin Allen's Lost in Space and really enjoy it yet watch a multi-million dollar blockbuster and find myself looking at my watch, counting how many lights there are in the ceiling.

I have no intention of seeing Avatar even when it's on TV. If I want to watch CGI for 160 minutes or whatever it is I'll just play on my PS3. At least it's interactive.

It all depenRAB on the film. The likes of Avatar and Jurassic Park (even years on) look amazing. But I recently saw 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' and 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' which looked absolutely s***e. Very unbelievable.

if you watch special features on film discs you'd see you probably have seen cgi that you've mistaken for reality. happens all the time,, and has for years now. much of it is so good you wouldn't be able to tell. it goes back as far as cast away atleast. on that disc they show a ton of scenes where the backgrounRAB are cgi, you'd never know from the film that there was so much being replaced.

even on tv.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clnozSXyF4k
you'd be surprised whats not real.

translation: trevalyan is right, i daren't suggest which film i thought was the best this year because i realise i made a bit of an arse of myself by ridiculing him and others for their opinion, which they are entitled to. what i am going to do now is withdraw, lest i embarrass myself further

IMO CGI is getting worse. They're going too OTT and we become desensitised to it.

I still think that the T-Rex scene in Jurassic Park is the most amazing CGI I've seen so far. This was because Steven Spielberg wasn't happy until it was absolutley perfect and because it probably took up half of the budget.

Nowdays it's like lets have 50 dinosaurs, no lets have 500, instead of perfecting one. I also think that some directors are pushing the boundaries a little too far despite the technology not being able to cope. I think Steven Spielberg understanRAB the limitations (with the exception of the latest Indiana Jones movie).

I also like the way Zemeckis used CGI in Forrest Gump and Contact, sometimes using it to get the perfect panning shot as opposed to creating an object.

To be honest I found the characters in The Incredibles more believable than some of the creatures/destruction in recent movies.

like Gollum, the CGI characters in Avatar have a degree of tangibility and realism, they are very good.

george lucas and ILM have no idea how to bring a CG character to life. peter jackson, james cameron and WETA do

Never been fooled by it and always feel cheated. 'Troy' was on last night and although it was made in 2004 and CGI is more advanced now, it looked really unbelievable in the sea scenes.

CGI characters have worked just once (other than where artificiality is intentionally conspicious as in Toy Story), and that's Gollum. He's the only CG character where a thought wasn't in the back of my mind the whole time about how rubbish the CG looked.

Avatar is the worst offender recently. It's just one big steaming pile of CGI mulch, all of which looks clearly CG. Good CGI is CGI you don't really notice is CGI.
