Are You A Movie Snob?

LittleMilkJug - I'm 100% like that. I only watch movies that match my state of mind at the moment. That's why I've stopped renting movies. If I'm not the in mood, I'll return them without watching them and that's a waste of money.



That's pretty much me. I do love movies with a cohesive story, and when I enjoy 'unusually structured' movies, it's because the characters are wonderful or funny or very interesting.

I just don't like movies like Mulholland Dr just because they're so artsy and they're supposed to be so deep. To me Mulholland Dr is not coherent enough and the characters are not that interesting that I'm dying to know who they really are, ohmigosh, I MUST know! Heh.
 
I will watch just about anything if I can. I am sometimes liking B-rate movies but not all. I watched something the other day and I cant find the name of it but when I do I gotta post it and see if anyone watched this. Its one of the few that I fully hated watching and should have stopped and saved my time.
 
I think this applies to me too. I just love watching movies so much, I'll pretty much watch anything and everything! And I don't expect the same from every single one that I see - I get that while some might require intellect and deep-thinking to understand them, others are just complete no-brainers, and that's totally fine with me.

I will sometimes discount films if they have someone in them that I don't like, but that depends on who it is, how much I dislike them, and who else is in the film. And I do sometimes dismiss films completely, but that's only if they're from a specific genre that I don't generally enjoy.
 
I would fight you to the death against that opinion. That's how much I hate that movie and all things David Lynch. :lol:
 
I don't think so...I will pass over a film if I'm not in the right mood, like for a comedy, but when I'm back in the right frame of mind I'll see it.

I must admit though, I'm a bit put off watching any film to do with Tom Cruise now (except for the Outsiders, one of my favorites and he has only a small part) because of his behaviour over the past couple of years.
 
Travelling 100 Miles does not make you a snob!, but the general concensus derived from this survey is that i am, i got 7-8/10, but then again however bad a movie, i do not dismiss the actors or directors, because in life, you cant get everything right :P.
 
Blue Velvet is one of the greatest movies ever made and David Lynch is a complete genius.
 
Or just don't watch Blue Velvet. What an evil, awful movie.

I wonder if not appreciating David Lynch gives me less movie snob points?
 
Yep that's me :nod: But I'm more if I liked an actor or actress a ton in one movie its hard for me to see them playhing another character. I don't know why but so true!

Also before a movie comes out and it is previewed on the tv constantly to get people interested in it than I know its gonna be a dude!

More and More movies are getting remade and they are horrible. I tend to stay away from remakes because if I loved the original including original cast then its hard for me to sit through the same movie in a sense with different cast. Its annoying with the new cast doesn't give off the same feeling the original did.

Hollywood has become the same old thing and its a shame. Every movie seems to be the same not saying I don't still watch movies but now I go in with a slight disappointment and thats no good!
 
Try watching the fullscreen version of Blue Velvet and you will change your mind immediately about prefering fullscreen. David Lynch´s movies are confusing enough but when you also have to watch a movie where you can hear people talking but there´s noone on the screen because the people are off on the right or left most of the time it becomes completely unwatchable.
 
I really wouldn't class myself as one, no. Maybe a movie geek//boff :look:

I watch so many movies, Big blockbusters, indie, foreign, kids movies. I always give a movie a go. My friends and I all have very different movie taste's but i will watch whatever they throw at me as i love movie making - Doesn't mean i will like the movie though :D My buddies call me a movie snob due to having a passion for foregin films, but to me that is simply loving movies of all cultures not being a snob.

As for the list i have to say that #1, #3,#4, #7, and #9 have all applied to me at one point but again i wouldn't say it's snobbish i would say it was more geeky :lol:
 
It sorta depends on the movie, if there are some nice special editions i'll get them, but the black bars annoy me. I want to use all of my screen and many times i'm left with only using 60% of my screen.

I'm sorta #1 from the list and I never pay attentionto any award shows, so maybe #2 applies? lmao
 
What full screen madness is that? :lol: Most special editions come only in WS, you're missing out!



Thanks for the list Alisha! :D I'm not a movie snob but #1, #4 and #5 apply to me. As for #8, I couldn't even finish Pi. I told myself I'd finish it later, but I never did.
 
This is funny, i'm the opposite on the widescreen/fullscreen buying. I will always go to Fullscreen first, and sometimes won't even buy a movie, if I have to get widescreen.
 
Yeah I know! So with that (good ratings vs summer blockbusters) leaving me in a bit of a quandary I always fall back on "am I personally interested in it? (it being the story or whatever). And in the case of Iron Man or The Dark Knight I just wasn't interested so I haven't seen either. In the end - despite all my snob tendencies - that's what it boils down to really. Whether I'm interested in it or not on a personal level. See, that doesn't make me sound so horrible now :lol:
 
I do watch films that I like, whether it's Hollywood, "foreign," independent. if it interests me, I'll give it a go. I tend to avoid those movie parodies like Date Movie and Meet the Spartans type of films though. I guess the only time I'll watch it if it's out on cable and I'm not doing anything.

I also do not like watching films which borderlines porn but people call "artsy," no matter how critically acclaimed the film is. That's why it's very important that I research about what I'll watch first.
 
I guess i´m a bit of a snob. I avoid the big Hollywood comedies/action-movies as much as i can. If there are five new movies in my local videostore and four of them are big Hollywood blockbusters and one is a French independent drama i always pick the French drama. I strongly dislike all the watered down "disney horror" that comes out of Hollywood. Any horror director that cut scenes just to get a PG-13 or R rating should just do something else and not waste the real horror fans time.
 
What about the summer blockbusters/superhero movies that garner great reviews? I believe Iron Man (an 8.2 or so of 10 on IMDb) and The Dark Knight (9.2 on IMDb) got a mid-90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
 
I'm definitely not :lol: I'll watch anything. Even if a movie isn't very good, it doesn't mean that I don't enjoy watching it. :goof:
 
Yes, I am a complete movie snob. I consider the Oscar period the best time for movies and actively avoid the summer blockbuster period. I haven't watched a blockbuster in years and don't intend to. Actually, I look down on summer blockbusters as a whole. I check IMDb for user ratings as well as user and external reviews and have watched shows before just because they are on IMDb's top 250 list. And the most embarrassing thing... for the most part I abhor movie remakes of books, remakes of classics etc. I adore classics and won't even bother to watch some of the remakes if I know it's going to be bad (eg Gus van Sant's Psycho).

I realise I'm coming off as a complete slave to critical attention and a huge snob, so I'll try to explain. See, I would watch a summer blockbuster if the story was good or if I was interested in it somehow, but in the past few years I can honestly say I haven't been interested in any of the summer offerings. I don't go for superhero movies or special effects - I want good directing, acting, script, yes - even cinematography, which you just don't find in summer stuff. :shrug: I'm not all bad - I like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, for instance - but for the most part I tend to love indie or Oscar-material and shun blockbusters. :blush:
