I think the media would like us to believe that we are, it makes for juicy stories.
The truth of the matter is, most people fall somewhere in between the two extremes in all of the cases you've cited. Problems arise when the more vocal of the extremes gets agitated, then you have 'war'.

I would argue that those often labeled "racist" are done so incorrectly.

For example: Is any and all opposition to affirmative action necessarily "racist?"

Are differences of opinion regarding the gravity of historical events necessarily "racist?"

Are the perceptions regarding the causes of crime and poverty racist?

Or is it a case of people being quick to seek some moral high ground to justify their position and silence the dissenters by labeling them "racist?"

I suggest that the majority of people called racist are not and are merely divided along other lines that you mention.

Clash of culture and ideology is far more divisive than race. This country will fracture along the cultural and ideological line one day, but I do not see the racial divide as being a weak spot. Clearly each ideological division is racially diverse and is contested more vigorously in the public forum.
