Weekend of slaughter propels Iraq towarRAB all-out civil war
From James Hider in Baghdad

IRAQ is slipping into all-out civil war, a Shia leader declared yesterday, as a devastating onslaught of suicide bombers slaughtered more than 150 people, most of them Shias, around the capital at the weekend.

One bomber killed almost 100 people when he blew up a fuel tanker south of Baghdad, an attack aimed at snapping Shia patience and triggering the full-blown sectarian war that al-Qaeda has been trying to foment for almost two years.

Iraq

It depenRAB where I guess. The Peripheral regions seem to be improving, although Shia fundamentalism seems to be spreading in Basra and elsewhere. Its hard to tell with Kurdistan but who owns Kirkuk's oil and the latest Turkish/PKK violence could make things interesting. In general though both the Shia south and Kurdistan seen to be improving.

The Center though seems to be in a cycle of complete carnage, particurly in Baghdad.Things there have gotten worse as electricity fails, suicide bombs go off and the centralised government struggles to operate from a position of strength as the Iraqi army is weak, there is no constitution or a strong capitalist economy. In the center things get worse everyday seemingly.

In a sense civil war, an armed conflict for political control of Iraq, has already started with Sunni insurgents and foreign fighters fighting against the Shia-Kurd government. Tremendous restraint have been shown among the Shia and KurRAB clans not to take it upon themselves to retaliate but to channel the process through the current Iraqi government they currently lead.
A full blown civil war would favor the current coalition of Shia and KurRAB. If left to their own means, western standarRAB of war would be quickly abandoned and it could be very bloody but efficient. The Sunni, culprit and innocent alike, would suffer horrendously. Neighboring Sunni state would be largely helpless to intervene.

Three weeks of developments in Iraq.

If you are one of the apparent majority and think that a government based more around the teachings of Islam would be a good plan then yes...far as we are concerned either being soldiers, barbers, fans of western democracy or just those who dislike to see religion gain such political power then no, its not a lot better at all really.

Considering that Saddam is no longer in power...that is a good thing.
But as for the rest...only time will tell.
We are in this mess now...lets just try to fix it and go our merry way.

Most of the US is christian, yet still the government is (or tries to be) secular. Religion and politics is bad news, regardless of the beleifs of the citizens its important that you do try to seperate the laws from the relgious laws. Especially when you have two different demoninations of Islam who have been at it each others throats for some time, in neighbouring countries and around.

American judicial system is based upon judeochristian belief. Americans have chosen to create a government based upon but functioning separate from religion.
Thus far as far as I know the Iraqi want a judicial system based Islam but have seen little to suggest they are advocating an Islamic theocracy like that of Iran. In fact, in large part, the Iranian Theocracy is viewed as a failure. And historically theocracies are the exception rather than the norm in the Middle East.

Being devout muslims, they are obligated to follow the laws of God in this life, does not mean they view their rulers as the agents of God. In fact, the interpretation of the Qu'ran is available to all learned and knowledgeable men and are not limited to a priesthood.

Vaguely based I'd say, most of this just rules for living in a society I don't think there is much particularly judeo-christain in it (i.e self defense is accepted as being reasonable, you can work sundays). Working hours I admit I'm not so sure on, but here those are slowly starting to change (sunday trading laws limit working to a lesser amount compared to other days and make pubs closer earlier..dammit)

Naturally there are many things in modern day to day life not covered in either the Bible or the Qu'ran. I don't think you appreciate how judeo-christian the West is, probably because you are a westerner.

Probably not, but I would think that a great deal would not be unique to Judeo Christain culture and most would have very little to do with the religion and more to do with the cultures it found here (i.e roman and saxon)

Certainly culture is a part of it. And it can be difficult to tease religious principles apart from cultural ways as the two, with times, often entwine in ways innoculous. I think this is even more so with muslim cultures, especially those based in the Middle East.

Once again, how many countries have been stable after 3 years of a war?(such as germany, japan).

the US sure has a short attention span now a days.

steeve do you not care that your president lied to you? That the war was COMPLETE BULLCRAP??? AMERICANS SURE HAVE BECOME APATHETIC THEY DONT DESERVE FREEDOM.

It can't get much worse short of a full civil war. The Sunnis comprise almost all insurgents. I am surprised that the Shi'ites that substantially outnumber them simply don't get worn out with the vicious attacks and start a bloody campaign of payback.

Bush lied to get us in this situation. He is lying to keep us there. His speech was simply the same-old-same-old Bushit. Every last single time he said 9/11 and Iraq, the crowd needed to say "LIE" in response. Then WE must stay the course and make the sacrifice. Who is the "WE?" Are the Bush twins going to enlist? NO. Are there any extended family members for Bush, Cheney, Rove or Republican congressmen on active in Iraq? NO. Haliburton just made over $7 billion in Iraq for 2004, and they are getting richer every last single day we stay there.
