Anyone can run as an independent... IF you have gobs of money.
Unfortunately, the system is rigged. Because a third-party vote essentially allows the worse of the two major candidates to win, they never stand a chance.
Voting needs to change so that you can select more than one candidate for any position. When we can split our votes, third party candidates will not only have a change, they can easily win.
(E.g., you vote Dem and for an independent, I vote Rep and for the independent, the independent gets 2 votes, they each got 1. If that trend continues, the indie actually stands a chance to win.)
Of course, the only way that kind of voting would be enacted is if Congress passes such a law or we have it as a Constitutional amendment. Since the 2 major parties rule Congress, that's NEVER going to happen... unless enough people rise up and demand it.
