are these texts inappropriate or am I behind the times?

I was 1 week from moving into a new flat on my own. It was a big step for me as I would be living as a young woman on my own and there are obvious dangers of that. Anyway my landlord called me to tell me what I would need to bring with me on the day I sign the contract. After the conversation he sent me the following text
"Did I see you in town today?"
I found it quite strange he was asking me this but thought he was just trying to be friendly so replied
"Lol might have been as I am often in town"
He replied
"Were you wearing high heels and a short skirt?"
At this stage I was quite uncomfortable and did not like the way the conversation was going so simply replied "no".
He text back saying
"you have a sexy look a like then ;-)"
I did not reply and he sent another text a minute later saying
"couldn't possible be as sexy as you though"
At this stage I was extremely upset and did not reply but he text again saying
"so what's your style ;-)"

At this I replied to say I did not wish to take the flat and did not wish to discuss the reason. Basically he is 49 and I am only 20 and his texts were sexual in nature and completely unproffesional. He would never have text such things to a man and since he was my landlord and would have keys to my flat and I wud be living alone I did not want to rent from him.
However I am deeply religious so am wondering, was I being a prude or did I do the right thing?
