Are there companies/individuals who privately sell other people's cars?

I have a car ('08 Pontiac Solstice) that I have been trying to get rid of for over a year now. It only has 8K miles on it, and I would rate the condition as new. However, my car is currently in Raleigh, NC (27560)(with a relative), while I am in Midwest America attending school. I tried to put it on craigslist/autotrader with no luck (and I don't feel comfortable trying to sell it alone), and I took it to carmax and they just offer too little ($13K). I wouldn't mind taking a loss on the car, but I still owe money on it so I can't come up with the difference. The KBB on it is $17K (still owe $15K).

My question is, who could I hire to sell my car? Anyone know a company who is reputable (maybe in that NC area)? Do you normally have to put any money up front? How involved would I be? What should I look for when researching companies (or individuals)? Any suggestions to avoid scams (probably my biggest fear)? Since I live pretty far away, I would only be able to fly in one time for a few days to sign some papers, is that a problem?

Also, please don't simply suggest to scrape up $2K to pay the difference to carmax. If I could do that I would. Otherwise, any suggestions would be appreciated.

On a sidenote, someone suggested that I trade in the vehicle for a more popular type of car (such as a honda) because it might be easier to resell. However, trading in a vehicle, for another vehicle seems like it might only compound my problems. Any thoughts?
