my friend told me they were overly aggressive fish when placed under the wrong conditions

Depend what size your tank and how big is GT. Small GT is actually not very aggressive, but as they get older, they become more aggressive. Sometime you will find aggressive GT or peaceful GT. If you wanna scare GT, try Salvini cichlids or large Red Head cichlid, cause those cichlids can scare GT easily without hurting each other. Remember, the more cichlids you have the less fight they get.

Well I'll agree with one thing, a larger tank is required, but being a cichlid keeper and breeder, albeit mostly just Africans, there just is no way you'll see me endorse trying to keep a killer type, Green Terror, with Blue Acara. That's like trying to keep Simba with Bambi.

Green Terrors are aggressive fish, regardless. Larger tanks will dilute the aggression you see, but in a general manner of speaking, cichlids in general, regardless of body of water of origin, will tend to pick an area which it feels is it's area. Now in milder fish, such as a Blue Acara, Yellow Labs for Africans, just as an example, the amount of space which placates them is not nearly as big as what it takes to placate a Jack Dempsey, Green Terror, Red Devil ect... which are all rather larger growing South American cichlids but come with a mind set, that a tank, the whole tank, IS it's territory. This is due to most tanks people keep are not the right size to placate them. For a Green Terror, you'd want something in the 90-125 gallon range, if you are considering tank mates. Larger is ALWAYS better if you can get it.

You will see aggression become more pronounced in the fish if the tank becomes compressed, as in too small for it. Increase the tank size, aggression becomes localized and diluted. The way to cope with this, really is not to put in another South American cichlid to control it, but adjust your tank size, or keep it by itself. This is a species which likes to rule the tank. If you insist on keeping conditions in your tank stressful and battle royal, I'd opt for a Jack Dempsey or Red Devil, but again, this is NOT MY FIRST CHOICE FOR A SOLUTION.
