...a book I'm writing? Ok I am writing a book, and am wondering what is/are the way(s) to paint a picture of a scene in the story for the reader(s). So if you have any tricks, or you know a best way, can you give me an example?

Check this scene out for example:

A drug dealer walks into a room in apartment in a dodgy neighborhood. It is filled with other dealers and dangerous men who he is about to make a deal with.

Could you tell me how you would describe this scene in a book you were writing? What details would you focus on to paint the picture for the reader. If you could just write the scene the way you usually would, that would be the most helpful.

Every author must use his/her own voice when writing. I could write you a paragraph using the details you just gave me, but then it would be in my voice, not yours.

I can give you some tips thought. First off. I always place myself in the scene. i.e. walks into a room in apartment. I think about what I would see in the room. Its not just filled with dealers and dangerous men. Look around. What do you see? What do you smell? What do you hear? Authors quite literally put themselves into the scene they are in. Close your eyes and walk into the room. I hope you know what I mean.

Second. Who are the people, what is going on. What are they doing, talking about. What is the dialog. I quite literally think of each character and get a basic description of who and what they are. Right down to what they are doing...smoking eating drinking talking....What are their thoughts. Morals, values, how they view the world. I even make up their backgrounds childhoods to help me feel who they are.

You can actually write a scene so the reader understands if it is casual (bunch of people sitting around getting high) or perhaps a dangerous scene (bunch of people sitting around the kitchen bagging up dimes) you have just walked into.

If you really really want to write, go to school for writing. Or at least take some night classes. It will help you organize your story and perhaps sell it.
