Are there any small dog breeds that can endure mild to agressive hiking?

I have asked before about getting a medium sized dog to be my hiking companion, but it seems all of the breeds are slighlty to large for my living situation. So now I rephrase my question. Are there any small dog breeds that have enough energy and endurance to withstand heavy hiking? It would also be nice to hike with dog off leash.

You should research Besenjis, Shiba Inus, Jack/Parson Russel Terriers, and Smooth Coated Fox Terriers. All of these breeds are small (as in Knee High or smaller) and have great energy and endurance. Good Luck.

My English Springer Spaniel is knee height & has the energy and endurance to hike for days! I don't know your living situation but springers are great hunting dogs - smart & useful - they could get you lunch while you hike!!

Well with out knowing your living situation and how extreme the hikes are it's hard to say for sure.

I have a doxie in great health and shape. She does 10 mile hikes through the mountains. She hikes of leash at places that allow. I have also heard most terriers (jack russel, fox, etc) will be able to hike with you as well. Going a little larger(not sure what's too big for you) basenjis, border collies, shiba inus, and almost any hound will also be good.

If you post more about your lifestyle and requirements we could help narrow it down for you.

English Cocker Spaniels (show or working lines will do)
Beagles
Jack Russell Terrier
