are there any scissors strong enough to cut denim or jean material?

Any sewing scissor is going to be able to cut denim. You will have trouble if you are buying regular/paper scissors.
 
Of course there is!
You're best bet is to head to Fabric Land or the sewing department in walmart or something and find the biggest pair of fabric scissors they have. There might even be ones specifically for denim. You could always ask someone there as well what they recommend.
If you don't want to buy new ones then a nice sharp sturdy pair of kitchen scissors will work well to. Other than that, not really. School scissors or ones that are too short will likely just hurt your fingers or not cut very well and leave you with a jagged edge.

Yes and no. the best scissors are the ones that are the sharpest. It is better that you buy new scissors, the ones that are the largest and that have an comfortable grip to it, because cutting though jeans will be hard, no matter what kind of scissors you use. But if you are going to use an old pair, make sure that it is not dull, because of 2 reasons. One it will not cut easily and two, and if it do cut, it will not leave an smooth and easy edge to handle with.
