Are there any (non-cable) channels that play weekday cartoons anymore? Granted, the options are likely limited to public-domain stuff but are they getting any airplay or has cable won in this situation?
No, I don't think so. Over at GAC we had a discussion about the possibility of Retro Television Network (RTV) showing classic cartoons, which would be a great idea.
Yeah, off cable cartoons are all but dead, at least new content wise. Here in Indiana, the '3 hour educational requirement' is filled on weekend mornings with nature/wildlife shows.
Somewhere, some DiC shows might still be floating around in some markets, but if you don't have cable, you're pretty screwed on children's cartoons in the U.S. outside of what meager programming they give us on Saturday Mornings.
Where I live, I get a Fox station OTA. They show Liberty's Kids and Archie's Weird Mysteries weekdays at 2pm. Interestingly, that adds up to five hours, which is two more than the FCC requires. Way to go above and beyond...
But yeah, unless the government repeals the ridiculous restrictions they have on kids shows, I don't see cartoons making a comeback.
My local Fox station rotated Liberty's Kids, Carmon Sandiego, Archie's Weird Mysteries, Digimon, the Littles, both Sabrina series, Sonic Underground, and a few others on weekday mornings until sometime last year. Sadly, it's gone now.
USA. Over-the-air broadcast at that. You need the DTV converter or a digital tuner. With digital broadcasts each channel has at least one sub-channel, on which they run local weather radar or an oldies TV service like RTN or ThisTV.
If you have digital cable, they probably provide these subchannels as well.
I used to get these a year or so ago during the Incredible World of DiC on what is now myNetwork TV before it and the CW switched there programming between each other and they were lost in the merger.
If you have Direct TV or Dish Network, they are supposed to provide the local broadcast channels like the cable companies are supposed to, but I have no idea how complete the lineup is. You may have to resort to a rooftop antenna and digital TV converter to get all that is available to you.
ION runs the Qubo block that also runs on NBC and Telemundo, timeshifted but maybe not on weekdays. I'll have to cheeck. They have been trying to get their own Qubo fulltime channel going but none of the cable or satellite providers will have it, even for free. Maybe it will turn up on the ION broadcast digital subchannels eventually.
From what I've read about for FCC regulations for digital TV, if a channel has at least one additional sub-channel (a minimum of 2 total channels), they are supposed to air an additional 3 hours of E/I shows for a total of six hours, either on the main channel, or on the sub-channel, so that may be why your station has 5 hours on the main channel.
I would bet that somewhere, there is. I know as recently as last year, there was a small station here airing what looked like public domain cartoons on weekday mornings. As recent as that was, I would bet that somewhere in the US there is another station that is still airing such cartoons on weekdays, though I cannot confirm such.
I still remember when cartoons would come on before school in the mornings on WB and Fox from like 6-9 and then they would air cartoons from about 3-5 when I got home from school, those really were the days. Today cartoons on non-cable networks are all but dead and all I can say is thank the stars there is cable and thank the stars there are good networks that air cartoons, otherwise television would be all but dead to me aside from movies and sports.
