nickname on a product offering? I understand that the college/university name is in the public domain and can be used, but is it a violation of any intellectual property laws to use the nickname as well (i.e. Louisiana State University Tigers or LSU Tigers)? All feedback and knowledgeable experience is welcomed.

generally you risk being sued if you put a brand name on your product without it being officially endorsed. if you were to use a uni or college name you would need to stress that it was not an official sponsorship and that the uni are not involved with the product.
it is best to seek permission to use a name that already exists, because even though it's a public name this is america, and people will sue for anything.
