Is it legal for a police officer to go through your phone? Exact conversation that took place, "if I look will I find a specific number in your phone?" answer "no" "don't touch your phone looks suspicious, give me the phone." The phone was handed over.
 
Yes and No
It all depends on the situation and if the police officer had a suspicion.
They can not use your cell phone to incriminate you. It is protected by the 5th amendment. However, you can have your cell phone lock and password protected to avoid that.
There are multiple situations in which your cell phone can help you, but it all depends what were you accussed of.
