Are there any laws against students fund raising for a school club outside of school?

My school band has a trip planned to go to Disneyland. We need $300 per student. So, we decided to fund raise for the money. We set up about 15 money jars around town a different stores and restaurants so people could donate some spare change to our cause.

Now, the administrative office is telling us we can not do it. We've always figured they don't like the band.
So what we want to know is whether they're just making up rules, or if they're argument is fact-based.
 
The school controls this type of thing. If the school says you can't do something, you can't do it unless you can change their minds.
