Are there any great NFL passers/QBs that had bad mechanics and a slow release...

Maybe I wasn't clear enough.. I was speaking to throwing mechanics mainly..
For example.. I could see someone with a slow release being successful if they had great instincts for who was going to be open and when more so that other QBs.

So even though their release was relatively slow and they had a weird throwing motion they still managed to get the job done.
It seems like Favre has a lightning quick release to me, is that correct?
 
Dan Marino was the best pure passer in the history of the league and people criticized his technique at Pitt.

Joe Montana did not have the quickest release either, but he made good choices and played with good WR.

You don;t hear as much about mechanics when they do well, but if a QB struggles, all of the technique "experts" will blame that.
 
Billy Kilmer, the Skins QB of the 70's, threw some of the ugliest, wobbliest non-spirals I ever saw. But the guy got the job done.
Former Eagles QB Randall Cunningham also had poor mechanics and a slow-as-molasses release, but he had several good years in Philly and Minnesota.
 
Brett Favre comes to mind as who not to watch to learn how to play quarterback. He didn't protect the ball well, made odd decisions early in his career, etc. But he is a Hall of Famer, and a great lesson in how to play football. He pours his heart into every game, and he is one of the all time greats.

No QB will dominate if he doesn't have the mechanics.
 
i wouldn't say dominated as in a Marino or Favre, but Bernie Kosar from the 80's Browns had the sidearm delivery, was about as mobile as a salted down snail in quicksand, but I believe has the record for the most consecutive pass attempts without an interception.

While he was never a top-notch quarterback, he was regarded as a highly accurate passer with extremely good decision making skills on the field.

My all-time QB that fits this description is Dan Marino nonetheless.
 
Jim Plunkett won Superbowl XV with a slow release and poor mechanics. Of course, it didn't hurt that he playing the Eagles and Jaworski was their QB.
