Are there any anthropologists who study their own culture?

I'm interested in any studies or research being done by anthropologists wherein they examine their own culture. Even any theoretical papers on the subject would be useful or some advice on where to go for this information would be greatly appreciated.
Either an emic or etic enthnography would be useful, I suppose. For example, I've come across a book by Conrad Kottak (an american) where he's looking at the influence of television across various aspects of american culture (consumerism, mythology, etc.). I'm interested in this idea of studying ones own society, how it's viewed from others within the discipline, who else is doing it...
Sorry if I'm not making much sense, this isn't my field and I'm not sure where to go for information as my university doesn't have an anthropology department.
