are Suzuki Vitara's safe and reliable cars?

I like them and i want a vehicle that is like a truck/suv thing so that i'm not stuck in a small box with wheels that is asking to get run over while i'm on the road.
Help?
also i don't have the money for a new 2009 or anything. i'm thinking more along the lines of an automatic vehicle that is somewhere in the 1990's
 
They are decent vehicles.

My brother has a 4x4 Grand Vitara and it's a neat little truck, good for winter driving also. I say it's a good choice if you don't want a car.
