Are snow tires a good investment for a 2003 Mazda Miata?

I live in Ohio and driving a Miata in the winter is bad. It has very little traction on snow and slides around in the driveway even when there's just some dry snow. My regular tires have enough tread left.

I'm wondering if I should bother buying snow tires for the car or if I should just keep it in the garage. It would be nice to have the car sometimes because my normal car is shared. But, I don't want to ruin the car by sliding off the road and hitting something.

Also, I've read that snow tires really improve ice traction but don't necessarily do very well on snow. Since snow and ice often go together, it would be good to have a tire that does both well.

YES!!! you should get good snow tires. a miata is expected to be horrible with all seasons because its rwd which is bad in snow. and to make it even worse, its a light car, so it will have less traction when its slippery.

snow tires will prevent you from getting stuck, and as you said, sliding off the road. with snow tires and common sense you will survive with a miata in the winter. and when i say common sense, i mean slowing down when the roads are bad.

actually snow tires do better on both snow and ice, who told you they only do good in ice? trust me, we've had snow tires before and they make a HUGE difference in any winter driving condition. the difference really is like the difference between night and day.

so even though a miata would theoretically be horrible for winter since its light and rwd, you will probably get by fine if you purchase a good set of winter tires. also if i were you, you should buy a set of steel rims. if you buy a set of steel rims, you wouldn't have to take your winter tires off your alloy rims to put your summer tires on and vise versa. instead you could switch tires yourself or if you can't do it yourself, you will still save if you get a mechanic to do it because its less work to switch tires if the tires already are on a rim. your tire will also last longer because if you constanly mount and take off your tire, it will stretch the tire and it won't last as long. another advantage is that you prevent your alloy rims from being damaged from road salt and snow and ice so your rims will last longer.
