Are SIM cards universal?

Sorry if I sound like a total noob, but I know nothing of SIM cards and searching these forums has resulted in nothing related.

Would a SIM card from a carrier in any part of the world (or unbranded) successfully activate on a different carrier, or can I only use one from my own carrier?

For example, would activating a Telus $10 SIM card on Rogers successfully work?

(P.S. I don't need to use data on the wireless line.)
 
1. No. A SIM card "activates" only on its' native carrier and occasionally a "related" carrier. Only a Rogers SIM activates on Rogers. Only an ATT SIM activates on ATT. (An ATT SIM can also be activated as a LOCUS SIM iirc.)
An "activated" SIM can "register" on any network where your carrier has a "roaming" agreement.

But yes all sim cards are the same meaning that if you buy an unlocked phone it will work with any sim card anywhere in the world on any gsm carrier. The beauty of gsm:-)
 
I have done several hardware upgrades over time with Rogers, and every time they have sent a new SIM card along with the new hardware.

I have always used my first original SIM, and the new ones that I got with each upgrade, are still shrink wrapped.

Are these SIM cards pre-activated, or can I pass them along to a friend to activate on his own, without jeopardizing my account ?
