Are remakes ever as good?

I think most films that are straight remakes will not live up to the standard of the first film, however if the 'remake' is not a remake of the film but has gone back to the source material (book, comic) or is re-interpreting the concept than it will have a chance of being alrigfht :)

That's right. Only the first few minutes of Evil Dead 2 count as a remake. Apparently, Sam Raimi couldn't get the rights to use clips from the original film, so he refilmed the salient scenes with just Ash and Linda.

Mchael Mann actually had the budget to do a proper version with the movie Heat (LA Takedown was a low udget TV movie - also directed by Michael Mann)

I alway think "Nikita" (the french film by Luc Besson) was so much better than the remake "The Assassin" (also by Luc Besson). He was given a budget and the film was in english but it never really had the spark. Sometimes you just can't improve on perfection.
