I recently purchased a 78 trans am with the stock 400 motor. I've been looking for parts for it and some are for Pontiac 400 and some are for Chevy 400. Are these the same? I know they r both GM but i just want 2 make sure before i buy a $400 crankshaft along with many other parts. Also does any know of any good performance website for this car?

The good people at Summit Racing will take the time you need to answer all your questions. performance and Pontiac ???? Just kidding....

the motor and transmission are different. the battery is on the opposite side on a pontiac but you probably could use stuff like calipers and rotors, stuff like that. the body parts are different

no chevy 400 is a small block like 305 350 307 262, pontiac is a big block and only pontiac parts will fit it, pontiac 301 326 350 are also big blocks some trans also used oldsmobile 403 which is also a big block, but not compatible with chevy big blocks

The Pontiac 400 is a completely different engine than the Chevrolet 400 incher. Chevrolet never put their 400 cubic inch small block engine in a Camaro or or newer Trans Am than yours.

No sir, ,unfortunately Pontiac and Chevy 400 engines are completely different!
Cost consideration with repairs, you'll get more bang for you buck with a Chevy, but for nostalgic purposes, you should to stick with the Pontiac.
Throw on an intake and carb combo combined with a new set of headers and maybe a cam and your Pontiac will make lots of power!
Good Luck!

no. at that time gm cars had make specific parts. some things are interchangeable such as starters and alternators but internal engine parts are not.
