Are police allowed to open and search my cell phones phonebooks and photos...

...when you get pulled over? I got pulled over late last night and the officers searched me for contraband and whatever but i noticed one of them had my cell phone flipped open and was browseing threw it(my cells wallpaper is a big pot leaf ha ha)and he asked why i have a pot plant on my cell now i know that if you just have a image of marijuana its no big deal cuz of free speach but can they do that and just go threw your phone like that?or do they need a warrant or something?
I wasn't in a car i was walking the street late at night and they pulled over and searched me but can they open and look threw my cell phone and go through its contents?
 
Answer: They definitely need a warrant to look through personal possessions of yours, they cant search your car without intent such as opening the trunk and can only search your car if they have seen something illegal or suspicious put in it such as looking through the glass and seeing a ounce of weed etc.
