Are people more attracted to those who have different physical traits than their own?

I often hear from some people that we as humans are more attracted to those who are a lot more different than us in terms of looks. I hear that a man with dark hair, brown eyes, and olive skin would be a lot more attracted to a Blonde hair, blue eyed and pale skinned woman over a woman with the same traits as him.

Is any of that true? I feel that I am a major exception to that rule (since I am more attracted to women who look similar to me)

What is your take on this?
