Are painted turtles the same as RES turtles care wise?

where i live, RES and eastern painted turtles live in a pond behind my job. so i guess they eat the same things, i even see them sitting on the same logs together. i had both turtles in my care and i fed them both the same turtle pellets and they did very well, but if you read up on them, even though the red ear slider gets bigger it is recomended that you give the painted turtle more space, so i guess there are some differences, but the lighting and temps and food is all the same.
 
I was gonna get an eastern painted turtle but the local petshop only has RES i did most of my research on painteds and a little on RES they seem kinda the same (other than size and color) so i wanted to know how much there care is alike. Is there a difference in enclosure (agian disregarding size) or diference in water depth ect. if you know any differeces please help.
