Are mollies dangerous? Which fish should I get?

I've heard from numerous people that their mollies have killed many of their fish.
I will be getting some fish soon and am wondering if they are a threat to others.

I have a 20-gallon tank and a male betta fish. I will be getting some more fish and am also wondering what fish would be good.
I have been looking at some fish I like..

A silver tetra
A red platy
Flame dwarf gourami

Are these a good mix?
would fish like these get along with eachother and my betta?

Platies will do fine. Tetras are fin-nippers, and Gouramis don't make good tank-mates for Bettas. They may fight. I once kept Black Mollies in a community tank and personally didn't have any problem with them. That's just my experience, though.
Other good choices are Corydora catfish (liked to be kept in groups of 3 or more), and ghost shrimp.
Get a book on aquarium keeping and/or Betta keeping, and it should have a section that tells you what goes with what. Good luck!

Mollies are very aggressive towards other livebearers, but the problem in your case is that they tend to nip long fins. This is also a problem with tetras and gouramis. The platies should do well with your betta though.

Tetras are shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of 6+. They can also nip long, elaborate fins, so probably best not to keep them with a betta splendens (assuming, of course, that that is what you have).

Platies should be kept in ratios of 1 male to 2-3 females. They may also nip the betta's fins.

Gourami and bettas belong in the same family group (anabantoids), and will flight to the death.
