Are Mazda 2nd hand parts expensive?

We are looking to buy a 2nd hand car and need something reliable and economical. We have had a road worthy assessment done on a mid 90s Mazda 121 that came back good. I have since been told that parts and servicing are really expensive. Does anyone have any experience in this area who can offer advice or suggestions?
 
Check the car scrapyards in your vicinity for cannibalised spares (these are cheap and good)
