Are marvel films re-booting? (spoilers)

Hi there.

I do film studies, so i have a vauge idea of how film stuido's work.

Now Marvel has their own studios, will they have the rights to all the characters and storylines from the comics history? I remember back a few years ago, that it looked unlikley that there'd be an avengers movie, cos' none of the studios (20th century fox, sony etc) had the rights to all the characters. In Iron Man, the first marvel studios movie to be released, there was a hint of foreshadowing to a possible Avengers movie. (After the end credits)

It's also been confirmed that Tony Stark (Iron Man) will have a cameo in the new Hulk movie. This wouldn't have been possible back a few years ago, but now Marvel have their own film company, they can do this.

So my question is, will Marvel make all the movies themselves (With help from Paramount). Does this mean that a Spiderman 4(sony) or an X-men 4 (20th century fox) will have a simular re-vamp to the Hulk? I've noticed that there's something simular in the tone of Iron Man and from what i've seen of the Incredible Hulk, could this be because they're both from Marvel Studios?

Iron Man was brilliant by the way. Hopefully all the new marvel films will be consistant now if they're all made by Marvel Studios. We won't have some great films like Spiderman 1 and 2, and some duff flicks like 'Hulk'.

I thought Hulk was being re-booted solely because of the Ang Lee disaster.

Mind you a Daredevil re-boot sans Ben Affleck would also be good.

Well that's probably one of the reasons. But if Marvel are have the rights to all the characters ever from their history, there's no knowing where they'll stop. They could re-vamp all of the characters and movies. However, there's no major re-vamps in the pipeline so far.

Here's the full list;

Independent films

In 2005, Variety reported that Marvel themselves will start producing films with Paramount Pictures distributing them. The funding will come from a seven year $525 million revolving credit facility with Merill Lynch. Since the announcement, Marvel's film slate has expanded to include:

Iron Man (2008) - Distributed by Paramount Pictures
The Incredible Hulk (2008) - Distributed by Paramount and by Universal Studios in the United States
In development
Iron Man 2 (2010) - Distributed by Paramount Studios - April 30, 2010 release[1]
Thor (2010) - Writer Mark Protosevich engaged. Directed by Matthew Vaughn. - Distributed by Paramount Studios - June 4, 2010 release[1]
The First Avenger: Captain America (2011) - Distributed by Paramount Pictures - Writer David Self engaged[1] - May 6, 2011 release [2]
The Avengers (2011) - Distributed by Paramount Pictures - Writer Zak Penn engaged[1]- July, 2011 release [3]
Ant-Man - Writers Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish and Director Edgar Wright engaged[1]
Nick Fury - Distributed by Paramount Pictures - Writer Andrew Marlowe engaged - Samuel L. Jackson engaged, has cameo as Fury in Iron Man [1]
Black Panther - Distributed by Paramount Pictures
Dr.Strange - Distributed by Paramount Pictures
Hawkeye - Distributed by Paramount Pictures
Shang-Chi - Distributed by Paramount Pictures
Cloak and Dagger - Distributed by Paramount Pictures
Power Pack - Distributed by Paramount Pictures

As you'll see, the co-production list has no 'in development' movies (however, Wolverine and Punisher: war zone are out soon, but they started production way back). And all the Marvel studio's movies are funded with the help of Paramount.

So it looks like Marvel Studio's is the future. Could Wolverine and Punisher be the last non-independant Marvel films?

I think (and this only a 'think) that the studios that currently hold the rights could continue to produce films in that series, i.e. Sony with Spiderman and Fox with X-Men.

Hmm ... I seriously doubt a Cloak & Dagger movie will ever see the light of day.

Not unless Marvel no marks like Nova also get the big screen treatment.

As far as I know Marvel arnt rebooting. This was on Dark Horizons website about their future plans:

"Giddy with the success of "Iron Man" over the weekend, Marvel Entertainment released its first quarter report to shareholders today and confirmed the next four titles they're putting into production.

First up will be "Iron Man 2" which has been scheduled for April 30th 2010.

Matthew Vaughn's take on "Thor" is also set for release on June 4th 2010.

"The First Avenger: Captain America" will swing his shield on May 6th 2011.

The much anticipated superhero team-up "The Avengers" has been scheduled for July 2011.

The company's "Ant-Man" and "The Sub-Mariner" remain in development with no fixed release dates. Their "Wolverine" film remains on course for next May. "

By the way, does anybody know here that there has already been a Doctor Strange film, a Nick Fury film, and quite a recent X Men film?
I think they even did a Captain America film in the 1950s.
And there was already a Punisher film made starring Dolph Lungdren.

The X men film was made as recently as the 90s and had Matt Frewer as one of the stars. Great American character actor (You'll know him in his most famous role as Max Headroom).

Another bit of Marvel superhero film trivia, did anybody know that quite a while back there was going to be a She-Hulk film?
It was going to star Brigitte Nielson, but for whatever reason they had to stop production. There are publicity photos around on the net with Brigitte Nielson made up as She-Hulk.

There was a Captain America film in 1990 - pretty dreadful if I recall, rather like the 1st Fantastc Four film (the one from 1994 with Alex Hyde White).

If I recall David Hasselhof was Nick Fury in the original Nick Fury film, made in the 1990's. this has been on sky a few times.

Didn't know about the first Dr Strange film, I have big fears for the new one. It will be a complete disaster if they cannot capture the essence of the original Steve Ditko drawings - they were just fantastic.

By the way Marvel/DC cross over trivia - Matt Frewer was also in the 1984 Supergirl film - just a small part though.

I reckon Marvel setting up their own studio is the only way films about niche characters like Hawkeye & Dr Strange will get made.

Still seeing as every 2 bit super hero is seemingly now guaranteed their place in the (cinematic) sun maybe I should write a letter to Avi Arad telling him to get a move on and make a Defenders film.

According to Ed Norton it's both a sequel & a retcon.

I take that to mean there will be no origin story whilst also conveniently forgetting Ang Lee ever happened. ;)

Yup. It will not contradict anything from the AL film, but will make no mention of it either. It's a sequel if you liked the first one, and a reboot if you didn't.
