Are Kids Missing Out On Saturday Morning Cartoons

Conversely, our parents and/or grandparents probably think that we missed out having not grown up with Howdy Doody, Time for Beany or Soupy Sales. Everything's relative.

The truth is that we can all speculate and discuss whether WE feel that kids are missing out on something until the cows come home, but in the end, it doesn't make a heap of difference because we're viewing things from the perspective of OUR generation. In order to get a legitimate answer to the question, someone should ask some kids if THEY think they're missing out on Saturday morning cartoons.

Yeah. You are definitely right, but this question is a matter of opinion. It is impossible for a kid to answer the question, if they have never experienced Saturday morning cartoons. In my opinion, however, I think the kids are missing out big time. In the long run, you are right, nostalgia blinds us from what we thought was good.

You do have a good point about the lack of variety and I agree with you on that, at least in the case of some Saturday morning shows on channels like Nick, Disney and CN. However, I don't know if that really matters for the kids of today. If Nick's ratings are any indication, it doesn't seem like a lot of kids mind watching shows that also air over the weekdays. As long as it is a show they like, I'm sure that there are plenty of kids who wouldn't care if it aired only on weekends or not. They're probably just focused on watching the show itself, not so much as the amount of variety in a block.

Again, you bring up a good point on how long Saturday morning cartoons were popular. However, I still think that technology has at least a factor into why Saturday morning blocks aren't as popular as they were. Kids have access to more shows on DVD than they did back when there were only videos and then the Internet has expanded, in terms of what people can access, from where it started quite a few years ago. That gives kids a chance to possibly watch videos of shows online and then, of course, there are more and more video systems available for kids to play with than back in the 90s.

As for the your comment about how the networks haven't made any good cartoons, I don't want to offend you, but I believe that you would have a different definition of a good cartoon than a kid would considering the networks with Saturday morning blocks have made their shows with kids in mind, not those who were kids years ago. Kids could look at one show and say it was good, while some people like us, who are over the target age audience, would say it wasn't good. It's basically all a matter of opinion and taste, as apposed to a fact.

A better question would be if they are missing out on variety. Spongebob is great and all, but it could get boring watching it 12 hours a day.

Anyone ever stop to think that kids don't care about what they're missing on Saturday mornings? When I was a kid there was no home internet, no DVDs, no hand-held video games, no ipods, no cell phones...

Kids have so many options these days that it's so surprise that the very landscape of Saturday mornings has changed. And if they want to watch cartoons on Saturday morning there's always cable. Nick is still a powerhouse, CN (obviously) is showing cartoons and there's always Disney XD, Boomerang and Nicktoons, assuming one has those channels. So it's silly to say that there aren't any cartoons on TV for kids to watch.
